Uses & Recipes For Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Reed Diffuser
These are great for small rooms. This oil combines well Patchouli & Bergamot. However it’s also a great fragrance used on its own. Its effects are warming, clarifying and uplifting.
Use a carrier oil like Sweet Almond oil, available cheaply at most supermarkets.

These essential oil reed diffusers release a very light, subtle scent and do not compare to the very strong, overpowering scent that’s released by the commercial reed diffusers which use artificially scented oils. You’ll need to flip the reeds once a week to refresh the scent. Once the reeds are completely saturated, you’ll need to replace them with new reeds. You will also need to replace your oil once it starts to lose its scent or if it starts to smell “off” – usually after a month or so.

  1. ¾ fill a glass container preferably with a small neck, with your Sweet Almond oil. You may have one lying around, or pick up one from a dollar shop.

  2. Add at least four tablespoons of Vodka. (brings out the fragrance). You can also use denatured or rubbing Alcohol. Denatured works best, because of its higher alcohol content.

  3. Reeds we have supplied free, these are cotton fibre & work exceptionally well.

  4. Add 50-70 drops of Ylang Ylang oil, personal preference applies.

Fragrances: make your own!
Half an ounce Sweet Almond oil (14.7ml)
30-35 drops of Ylang Ylang oil, or create your own blend as shown below. 2 tbsp cheap Vodka as a preservative. It prolongs the fragrance & enhances the top notes. However, it is not necessary to add alcohol, see below.*

Start with your Sweet Almond carrier oil, or you can use fractionated Coconut oil. Then add those fragrance oils you wish to use, starting with base notes.

You could make the fragrance/perfume using only one essential oil, however, it’s lots of fun to make a blend from three or more scents, usually with a top note, middle note, and base note.

Top notes are the fragrance that you first smell, and therefore are the first to evaporate. The essential oil of Bergmont is a great top note oil.

For a middle note, Lavender or Lemon are good options. The middle note, known as the heart note, is considered the heart of the fragrance. It shows up once the top note has evaporated, and lasts longer. The middle note is more mellow and well-rounded.

Ylang Ylang as a base note is ideal. Base notes are the scents that linger the longest.

Whether they are top, middle or base notes, there are no rules. Have fun and experiment with them. Dab the fragrance on your pulse points (behind the ear, knee and inside of wrist). See how it wears after a time.

*Add alcohol for a preservative. This step isn’t necessary, but if you do it, use Vodka, because it is odorless. This is helpful if you want your scent to last longer, & it also enhances the top note. You can use Isopropyl alcohol instead.

Nothing compares to a soak in the bath after a challenging day.
Take a handful of Sea salt, add to it 7-10 drops of your favorite oil, & then add to bath. Sea salt, with its cleansing, mineral-rich properties, makes it a luxurious, healthy experience. You can also use Bicarbonate of Soda or Epsom salts in the same way, both great for aching, tired limbs.

This is one of the few essential oils that can be used directly on the skin, but patch test first, as some skins are sensitive, or use a carrier oil like Sweet Almond, by using the by-the-drop method: add 12 drops of Ylang Ylang to each fl. ounce (30 ml) of your carrier oil.

A popular use for Ylang Ylang, is applying it to the skin to preserve that “youthful glow”. It can help prevent signs of aging or irritation. It is even said to be powerful at fighting the development of skin cancer cells and melanoma. Combine one to two drops with Sweet Almond oil or fractionated Coconut oil, and massage it into the face once or twice daily for protection.

NOT known for its culinary abilities, as its fragrance is so strong.

Pest control

A bug repellent that works, which you can safely apply to the skin when mixed. Combine Ylang Ylang with equal amounts of Eucalyptus, Cedarwood & Lemongrass, totalling 25% overall. Then add 75% of your carrier oil: Sweet Almond, Sunflower, or fractionated Coconut oil. In fact, all of the oils supplied will work as repellents; just some better then others.

Cleaning Products
Many essential oils are powerful antimicrobials and antibacterial substances, and Ylang-Ylang is no different. Essential oils are an alternative disinfecting solution. They have been shown to be effective against microbial films that form on surfaces. Ylang Ylang oil kills germs and leaves everything smelling fresh and clean. To boost the grease-cutting power for your cleaning spray, add citrus oils like either Lemon, Lemongrass, Bergamot, or Sweet Orange. You can use them all, or just one that you have a preference for.

To make 2 cups of cleaning spray, use 1¾ cups of water, ¼ cup of white vinegar, 15 drops of Ylang Ylang oil, and add another 2-7 drops total of the remaining essential oils that you are going to use.

If using as a floor cleaner, cut down the amount of oils to just a few drops of each, as some floors can become slippery because of too much oil applied.
