Uses & Recipes For lemon Essential Oil

Reed Diffusers
These are great for small rooms. Lemon has a distinct citrus aroma, which will help cleanse and purify air and surfaces in your home. Whether you are trying to eliminate airborne odors, or just like to keep your house smelling fresh, bright and clean, Lemon is an optimal choice for diffusing on its own; or it blends well with other citrus oils, like Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, & Tea tree. Use a carrier oil like Sweet Almond oil, available cheaply at most supermarkets.

These essential oil reed diffusers release a very light, subtle scent and do not compare to the very strong, overpowering scent that’s released by the commercial reed diffusers which use artificially scented oils. You’ll need to flip the reeds once a week to refresh the scent. Once the reeds are completely saturated, you’ll need to replace them with new reeds. You will also need to replace your oil once it starts to lose its scent or if it starts to smell “off” – usually after a month or so.

  1. ¾ fill a glass container, preferably with a small neck. You may have one lying around, or pick up one from a dollar shop.

  2. Add at least four tablespoons of Vodka (brings out the fragrance). You can also use denatured or rubbing Alcohol. Denatured works best, because of its higher alcohol content.

  3. Reeds we have supplied free. These are cotton fibre, & work exceptionally well.

  4. Add 50-70 drops of Lemon oil. You may wish to combine with some of our other suggested oils, so personal preference applies.

Fragrances, make your own!
3 tsp Sweet Almond oil
2 tbsp cheap Vodka as a preservative. It prolongs the fragrance & enhances the top notes. However, it is not necessary to add alcohol. See below.*

Start with your Sweet Almond carrier oil, or you can use fractionated Coconut oil. Then add those oils you wish to use, starting with Base notes. You could make the perfume oil using only one essential oil, however, it’s lots of fun to make a blend from three or more scents, usually a top note, a middle note, and a base note.

Top notes are the fragrance that you first smell, and therefore are the first to evaporate. The essential oil of Lemon is a great top note oil.

For a middle note, Lavender or Ginger are good options. The middle note is considered the heart of the fragrance, which shows up once the top note has evaporated, and lasts longer. The middle note is more mellow and well-rounded.

Frankincense as a base note is ideal. Base notes are the scents that linger the longest. Frankincense is particularly good for extending the life of citrus components, as it has a lemony element to its own scent.

Whether they are top, middle or base notes, there are no rules. Have fun and experiment with them. Dab the fragrance on your pulse points (behind the ear, knee and inside of wrist). See how it wears after a time.

*Add alcohol for a preservative. This step isn’t necessary, but if you do it, use Vodka. It is relatively flavorless, & can be helpful if you want your scent to last longer. It also enhances the top note. If you are using 60 or so drops of essential oil, you can use between two to four ounces of alcohol. You can, instead, use Isopropyl alcohol.

Notes of those Oils supplied:

Top notes: Bergamot, Eucalypus, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemongrass & Kaffir Lime, Holy Basil
Middle notes: Lavender, Ginger, & Coriander, Thyme
Base notes: Cedarwood, Frankincense, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang

To make a spray perfume: Add about 1 part of essential oils to 10 parts of the alcohol base. Shake the mixture vigorously to dissolve the essential oil into the alcohol base. Pour the alcohol base into the perfume atomizer bottle, and use as a perfume spray.

Rollerball perfumes: As per recipes above, these provide a convenient application method. Handy purse size. We have supplied two free bottles for your Ultimate Essential Oil Package. Check out our range of 5ml roller bottles for additional purchases.

Bathing Nothing compares to a soak in the bath after a challenging day. Take a handful of Sea salt, add to it 7-10 drops of your favorite oil, then add to bath. Sea salt, with its cleansing, mineral-rich properties, makes a luxurious, healthy experience. You can also use Bicarbonate of Soda or Epsom Salts in the same way. Both are great for tired, aching limbs.

Beverages
The benefits of Lemon drink have been around as long as anyone remember, from Lemon tea to Lemon with honey to fight off the effects of colds & influenza, or just as a general pick-me-up.

Topically
Contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties, and is a natural astringent, gently cleaning and toning dry skin without dehydrating it. Do not apply this pure essential oil directly to your skin.

For a general body cream/moisturizer, make a 2% dilution using the by-the-drop method: add 12 drops of Lavender to each fl. ounce (30 ml) of your carrier oil: Sweet Almond, Sunflower, or fractionated Coconut.

Culinary
If you see that a recipe calls for Lemon zest or essence, then a few drops of Lemon oil can easily take its place. For hot dishes, add a couple of drops, diluted in a couple of tablespoons of your cooking oil, to help it disperse. This creates a wondeful dish. Wait until the end of the process before adding the essential oil. These are called “volatile oils” for a reason: they are relatively fragile, and will dissipate quickly in high heat!

Pest control
Bugs certainly don’t like Lemon oil. A few drops with Sweet Almond oil applied to the body, will give some protection from biting insects, with an attractive citrus scent.

You can also combine with equal amounts of any of the essential oils we have supplied. Have fun, experiment: make your own blend with up to a total of 25% of oils overall, by choosing those that you favour the scent of, adding 75% of your carrier oil: Sweet Almond, Sunflower, or fractionated Coconut. All of the oils supplied will work as repellents; just some a little better then others.

Cleaning Products
A great alternative to regular kitchen and bathroom cleaning sprays. Lemon oil kills germs, and leaves everything smelling fresh and clean. To boost the grease-cutting power of your cleaning spray, add other citrus oils, like Lemongrass, Bergamot, or Sweet Orange. You can use them all, or just one that you have a preference for.

To make 2 cups of cleaning spray, use 1 ¾ cups of water, ¼ cup of white vinegar, 15 drops of Lemon oil, and add another 2-7 drops total of the remaining essential oils that you are going to use.

If using as a floor cleaner, cut down the amount of oils to just a few drops of each, as some floors can become slippery because of too much oil applied.
